We are all ego-monsters. At least to some degree, everything we do is to feed our own sense of pomp. Not entirely, but everyone has some in them. Ego can be a great thing. A healthy dose can help us professionally. It gives us the confidence we need to meet challenges. However, when it comes to parenting, there is not much room for ego. Even experienced parents are continually learning. Having a child has given me, a self-admitted egomaniac, a hearty helping of humility in my life as I struggle to understand what it takes to be an effective parent.
